3Js Taste Testing of Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2016
At 3Js Cigar Shop in Wellington this past Thursday night, we sampled a few of the top rated cigars
featured in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2016. We enjoyed an evening with friends, an assortment
of fine craft beers, and the smokes tasked to sample.
We featured the following sticks from the Top 25:
E.P. Carrillo Seleccion Oscuro Piriamides Royal (#4)
Padron Serie 1926 No. 90 Natural (#5)
Arturo Fuente Rosado Sungrown Magnum R Vitola Forty-Four (#6)
The taste testing was not done blind, as that evening we were more focused on the experience each
cigar provided with relation to the brand, where the cigar was made, where it fell in the top 25 for 2016,
and overall enjoyment of the smoke. The following is a tabulation of our results for the first three cigars
we sampled at 3Js that evening.
#4 E.P. Carrillo Seleccion Oscuro Pirimides Royal: this cigar made by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo is crafted in
the Dominican Republic. The wrapper is grown in Mexico which provides it with its dark color. The
blending of the binder from Ecuador and filler from Nicaragua gives it a full bodied yet nuanced taste
that does not overpower the palate. It is a 6×52 cigar that remains consistent throughout. An excellent
after dinner choice.
#5 Padron Serie 1926 no. 90 Natural: another truly remarkable product crafted by the Padron family. It
is a commemorative cigar celebrating the 90th birthday of family patriarch, Jose Orlando Padron. The
interesting feature of this 1926 is that it is not square pressed, but round. It is handmade in Nicaragua
with its wrapper, binder and filler exclusively grown in that country. The cigar is a 5 1/2 x 52 ring gauge
that provides a smoothly rich smoke with nuances of cocoa and coffee which enhance with each
glorious puff. This smoke is one of a kind and a connoisseurs’ delight. Not to be missed.
#6 Arturo Fuente Rosado Sungrown Magnum R Vitola Forty-four: this cigar is another standout smoke
by the Fuente family. It may be listed as a medium bodied cigar, but it is full of flavor and a pleasure to
smoke. The Forty-four is so named for the number of cigars packed in a box. It is manufactured in the
Dominican Republic with a wrapper from Ecuador and binder/filler from the Dominican Republic. The
Ecuadorian wrapper has been aged for almost 10 years. This cigar is smooth and creamy with distinctive
hints of blackberry fruit and maple syrup covered nuts. It smokes extremely well with a tremendous ash,
if one has the backbone to let it burn. Overall, one of our favorite cigars of the Top 25.
